Snowden Goes Deep Against Militia

Rich Snowden prepares to launch a pass against the Militia
MERIDEN, CT- Rich Snowden throws four touchdown passes with a season high 267 yards against the Western Connecticut Militia in the Connecticut Panthers’ 28-20 victory.
“We couldn’t afford to drop two games to them” said Snowden, “we needed to start quick this week.” Snowden did just that. In their second possession of the game he hit a streaking Kareem Robinson for a 78 yard scoring catch in the first quarter. The second quarter saw Snowden hit Robinson again for a 50 yard strike over a leaping Militia defender. An interception ended a promising drive by the Militia and gave the ball back to the Panthers inside of two minutes to play before the half. Snowden takes the opportunity to find an open Jamie Bryant up the right sideline who turns the catch into a 55 yard run into the end zone giving the Panthers a 21-10 lead heading into the half.
Pressured by David Reese (99), Kevin Oberg collected for 292 offensive yards against the Panthers
Set up by a 68 yard kickoff return by Bryant to start the half, Snowden stayed hot as he hit Vinny Muli for a 30 yard touchdown toss that looked to put the game out of reach. “The Militia blitzed a linebacker and he nearly tackled me, when I slipped free I saw Vinny running into the end zone all by himself.”
The Militia’s offense relied on the arm of Kevin Oberg (18/31 242 yards) and the hands of receiver Matt Tyrell (11 catches for 170 yards) for most of the night. “We just kept stalling when we got into scoring range” said Oberg, “it’s something we have to solve moving forward.” The Militia saw two turnovers end drives deep in Panthers territory. They also saw two field goal miscues occur that also ended potential scoring drives.
Jamie Bryant collected 269 combined receiving, rushing, and return yards against the Militia
The Militia did tighten up defensively in the second half by keeping the Panthers off the board after Muli’s early third quarter score. “We settled in a little; we couldn’t allow any more points” said linebacker Justin Bledsoe. In the fourth quarter, Bledsoe grabbed a deflected Snowden pass and rumbled 47 yards for a touchdown. A 37 yard field goal by Tyler Kurjiaka cut the Panthers led to eight with five minutes to play. After an exchange of possessions, the Militia had the ball with two minutes to play and 75 yards to go to tie the game. A few well-placed pass completions by Oberg moved the ball toward the mid-field stripe. Beating his blocker, Panthers Dustin Lindon sacked Oberg and forced a 4th and long situation for the then undefeated Militia.
Kareem Robinson hauled in two touchdowns and 135 receiving yards
As Oberg’s final pass of the night sailed out of bounds, the Panthers took over possession and secured a tie for the lead in the AAA Southern Division. “Just like it has been the last three years” said Lindon, “we will see them in the playoffs.” The two teams have met each other in the Division Championships the last three seasons with the Panthers winning each matchup.
Tyler Kurjiaka’s 27 and 37 yard field goal kept the Militia in contention all night
