Rocket Secures The Win

MERIDEN, CT –. The winners of last season’s Colonial Conference, the Panthers relied on their future Hall of Famer Jamie Bryant and their championship pedigree to defeat the Granite State Destroyers 13-0 in their home opener.

Slowed by an aggressive Destroyers defense and multiple miscues, the Panthers offense only collected 70 total yards in the first half. “We just couldn’t get it together,” said General Manager Anthony Medeiros. “Penalties, drop balls, you name it, we did it.” With less than three minutes to play before halftime, a Destroyers punt was field and returned 44 yards by “Rocket” Bryant for the only score of the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Panthers called on Bryant again to seal the game. Inserted at quarterback to give the team a needed spark, Bryant found an open Kevin Sylvester for a touchdown pass that would conclude the scoring for the night.

“It was a game where the defenses on both teams overwhelmed the offenses,” said Panthers Head Coach Mark Welch. “We just made some big plays at key moments; we did just enough to win tonight.”

“I know they don’t believe in moral victories,” said NEFL Representative Anthony Morgante, “that being said, the Destroyers clearly showed that they belong in AAA”. The Destroyers will host the hottest team in the conference in the Boston Bandits (2-0) for week three. The Panthers will play their second consecutive home game as they host the Mill City Eagles (0-2).
