Rampage Gets First AAA Win

Giovanni Sanders (8) throws six touchdown passes in the win.

SOMERVILLE, MA – After nearly two seasons in the NEFL AAA level, the Somerville Rampage secure their first win in their 40-32 battle with the New Hampshire Charge. The AA champion in 2015, the Rampage had lost 16 consecutive regular season matchups until this past weekend.

Down 20-6 at the half, a Giovanni Sanders scoring pass to Ty Berrie started the Rampage’s historic comeback. The back and forth fight in the second half saw both teams combine for 46 points and over 400 yards of total offense in the third and fourth quarters. Sanders was the star of the day however as he threw for a career and franchise best 6 touchdown passes. “He kept us in the game, even being down, he (Sanders) and the rest of the team kept their composure and just kept fighting.”

The Rampage defense and special teams units also played a huge role with obtaining the team’s first victory. Defensive back Jay Hughes ended a Charge second half drive with a timely interception. Do-everything player Peter Bien-Aime finished the game with an offensive score to go along with a game-high 8 solo tackles. With less than two minutes to play, veteran speedster Shadrac Louis V took a kickoff and returned it to the 8 yard line giving Somerville the chance to upset New Hampshire. After a first down incompletion, Sanders found an open Bobby Novello for the game winning score. The two-point conversion by Daquawnn Gunter gave the Rampage an 8 point lead and an eventual win.

Junior Brown’s fingertip touchdown catch put the Charge up by two scores in the second half.

“We had lost games in a lot of ways,” said a Rampage representative. “We lost in overtime. Lost on a Hail Mary. We let go of a 20 point first half lead one game. And we did it all. This week we put it all together to get the win.”

The Rampage, along with the league, will take a week sabbatical during Labor Day weekend. They will resume on September 9th against Merrimack Valley Nor’easter. “Our players are still flying high after the win. We just hope to keep this momentum going heading into next week and the balance of the season.”
