Game of the Week (5) Recap
- Updated: August 18, 2014

HAMDEN, CT- Saturday’s GAME OF THE WEEK showed us that the only defense that can slow down the Panthers offense is that of their own. “Our defense stole the show today” said Coach Welch, “when they play like this there is little offenses in the NEFL can do.” The Panthers scored three defensive touchdowns on their way to a 28-0 shutout of the upset minded Connecticut Chiefs.
Shante Wynn opened up the scoring with a 68 yard interception return of a wayward pass from Dino Mancinelli. “I saw it coming the entire way” said Wynn, “I just needed to get my hands on it and it was six points.” Later in the half Gerald Patrick stripped the ball from a Chiefs ball carrier which allowed defensive back Antoine Carr to pick it up and return it 60 yards for another defensive score. A miscue in the backfield led to another Chiefs fumble that was picked up by end David Reese who rumbled in from 35 yards out for a defining 21-0 lead.
With the defense finding the end zone so often, Rich Snowden had limited opportunities on the field. “We didn’t get a chance to do much tonight; our offense basically took the night off” he joked. Snowden however kept his consecutive games with a touchdown pass streak (5 games) going connecting with speedster Garry Coles for a 66 yard score to seal the game.
The defense held the Chiefs to less than 80 yards of offense as they allowed Mancinelli to be sacked 7 times. “We always apply pressure on the passer” said Welch, “but when the guys take the ball away we are a special team.” The win places the Panthers securely into first place in the Division heading into their bye week. “The week off will give us time to prepare for the second half of the season; we want to keep rolling on both sides of the ball and try to secure home field for the playoffs.”
