BRIDGEPORT, CT- After scoring 34 points against the vaunted Militia defense week one, then limiting the NJ Spartans offense to less than 70 yards in week two, the Bridgeport special teams were the stars of the game in their 27-8 victory over the feisty Tri-State Bulldogs.
In the first series of the game, quarterback Dino Mancinelli found receiver Theo Jordan for a 65 yard touchdown. On the very next possession, the Bulldogs Cory Lane took a handoff and sprinted 82 yards for a score. A successful 2 point conversion gave the Bulldogs the lead and was the first time the Gators have trailed in a game all season. &ldquot;We knew the Bulldogs weren't going to let us walk over them tonight; this was going to be a fight&rdquot; said Akeem Wright. Wright, who has been limited offensively the last few weeks, took a second quarter punt and went 53 yards for a touchdown to give the Gators a 14-8 lead heading into the half.
The third quarter saw the Bulldogs defense frustrate the Gators offense forcing Mancinelli to throw the ball underneath their zone and negating any big plays. Trading possessions, a Bulldogs punt late in the third quarter saw running back Ron Narraine go 57 yards for a backbreaking touchdown. &ldquot;That second return hurt us&rdquot; said Bulldogs coach Norman Mann, &ldquot;we were within a score for a while; that really put us in a tough spot.&rdquot;
The fourth quarter saw Gators kicker Luigi Liovvi convert both a 24 yard and a 36 yard field goal to put the game out of reach. &ldquot;We're going to have games where people are going to slow down our offense&rdquot; said Gators coach Chris Weiner, &ldquot;our special teams stepping up like this can help us have a special season&rdquot;.
