Special Teams Boost Wardogs

Damon Belin and the Wardogs defeat the Panthers

NORTH SMITHFIELD, RI – In the rematch of the 2017 Colonial Championship, the Wardogs excel in all three phases of the game and defeat the Panthers 29-16 in the “Bone Yard.”

Rhode Island got a quick start on the first play of the game when speedster Kashif Montgomery went 88 yards on the opening kickoff. The score instantly put the Panthers on their heels and gave the home team an early lead. Montgomery repeated the feat in the second half as he took a late game kickoff to the end zone to seal the victory.
The Panthers were without their All Star Jamie Bryant. Without the centerpiece of their offense, head coach Mark Welch had to look elsewhere for an offensive punch. Reserve quarterback Tyrell Boseman stepped in at quarterback and connected with Demitri Lucy for a passing score. Leading rusher Kevin Woolfolk also got in the end zone to cut the Wardogs lead in the third quarter.

Jeff Costa, Colonial Conference leader in touchdown passes the last few seasons, added to his totals as he connected with both Damon Belin and Marqueem Monroe for scoring catches. The Wardogs defense stepped up and held the Panthers scoreless four separate times deep in Rhode Island territory. The defense limited the Panthers to less than 200 yards of offense on the night.

The win evens the Wardogs record to 2-2 and gives them needed momentum for the second half of the season. “We have put together a couple of good weeks on the field” said Costa, “we’ve figured out some things and now are ready to finish the season strong.” The Wardogs will travel to Manning Field to take on the 3-1 North Shore Generals. “The Generals are playing some very good football. We will have our hands full again this weekend.”

The Panthers continue the toughest part of their schedule as they go on the road against the undefeated Boston Bandits (4-0). The Panthers and the Bandits have won 2 of the last three Colonial Conference Championships. “They are a championship level team” said Coach Welch, “we have to forget about this loss and get ready for the Bandits.”
