PORTLAND, ME- The Maine Sabers took an early lead and didn't relinquish it as they defeated the Southern Maine Raging Bulls 28-13 in an interstate battle.
In the first quarter, Sabers quarterback Jeremy Shorey found Rod Johnson for the opening touchdown of the game. During the following possession, defensive back Anthony Hicks picked off a Alexis Colon pass and returned it 40 yards to the end zone and giving the Sabers an early 14-0 lead.
Colon redeemed himself in the second quarter with a two yard plunge to cut the lead in half. The Sabers executed a great end of the quarter drive culminating in Shorey finding Hicks for a 6 yard acrobatic catch to give the Sabers a 21-7 lead before the half.
Looking to mount a comeback, the Bulls Henri Mosher connected on both a 26 yard and 40 yard field goal to cut the lead to 21-13 heading into the final quarter. Both defenses stiffened as the teams traded possessions. With less than four minutes on the clock, running back John Wiechman scored on a 2 yard run to give the Sabers the final score of the night and a quality win for their organization.
&ldquot; This was a great win for us&rdquot; said Sabers representative Steve Goodrich, &ldquot;the NEFL is an incredibly competitive league; going 3-0 is really putting us in position to make a run at the playoffs&rdquot;.
