MERIDEN, CT- The Western Mass Warriors amazing 20 game win streak ended last night in the hands of the Connecticut Panthers relentless defense. The 25-0 dominate performance by the Panthers was spearheaded by six turnovers and special teams excellence.
A defensive struggle most of the first quarter, Panthers Richie Snowden connected with Naciki Reid for a 30 yard touchdown catch for the opening score of the game. An exciting 68 yard punt return for a score in the second quarter by Jamie &ldquot;Rocket&rdquot; Bryant gave the Panthers a 14-0 lead heading into halftime.
&ldquot; With the speed and experience we have on defense we feel if we get a few score up on a team it will be hard for a team to rebound&rdquot; said safety Court Sutherland, &ldquot;that showed tonight.&rdquot; The second half saw the defending champion Warriors commit four turnovers including a fumble recovered by linebacker Gerald Patrick in the end zone for a touchdown.
A 33 yard field goal in the fourth quarter concluded the scoring for the night and gave the Panthers a huge divisional win. &ldquot; They beat us in all three games last season and kept us out of the championship game&rdquot; said Bryant, &ldquot;we needed this win.&rdquot; The win gives the Panthers a 2-0 record heading into another divisional game against the Connecticut Gamblers (0-2) while the Warriors will look to get back on track against the Hartford Whalers (1-1).
