OFF AND RUNNING

SPRINGFIELD, MA- Scoring early, the Militia defense controlled the balance of the game in their 21-7 victory over the Western Mass Warriors. The win gives Western CT their 5th straight victory heading back into divisional play.

&ldquot; We came out hot&rdquot; said quarterback Kevin Oberg. On the third play of the game, Oberg hit Edwin Heath in stride for a 78 yard catch and run through the middle of the Warriors defense for a score. After a Chris Boarders interception, Oberg engineered a six play drive culminating in a 7 yard touchdown run by Lionel Assie giving the visiting team a quick 14-0 lead. &ldquot; We needed to set the tone right away&rdquot;. Getting back on track in the second quarter, Boarders found receiver Chris Macharie for a 4 yard TD reception to cut the lead in half before intermission.

The second half saw both teams defenses really step it up. Strong performances by linemen Anthony Aponte (4 tackles) of the Militia and Ulyssis Wannamaker (5 tackles, sack) for the Warriors controlled the opposing teams offenses for most of the game. With less than five minutes left in regulation, Oberg found tight end James Wish for a 12 yard touchdown strike and ended the Warriors chances of a comeback. &ldquot; This was another four quarter game for us&rdquot; said Oberg, &ldquot;it was kinda ugly but sometimes it happens that way; we just wanted to get the win&rdquot;.

The win sets up a huge rematch next week with the Bridgeport Gators, the team they lost to in week one. &ldquot;Next week is a big game for us; a win really does a lot for us regarding home field advantage in the playoffs&rdquot;.
