GOTW – Panthers at Wardogs

Jeff Costa averages nearly 300 passing yards against the Panthers defense

The two best teams from 2017 are as expected near the top again. The Connecticut Panthers (3-0), last year’s Colonial Conference champs travel to the Rhode Island Wardogs (1-2) for our Game of the Week.

Taking on some of the upstarts in the league the first few weeks, there are some who feel this matchup will be the Panthers first true test. “We faced some lessor experienced opponents the first part of this season,” said Connecticut receiver Kevin Sylvester. “Taking the trip to Rhode Island will show us where our team really is at this point.”

The Wardogs schedule however have proven to be a lot tougher. Losing to the undefeated Middleboro Cobras and Boston Bandits, the Wardogs feel they have worked out their kinks and are ready to get back on track. “We may have needed to get punched in the mouth,” said a Wardog assistant coach. “It woke us up. We figured some things out and are ready to move forward.” That showed during their 32-13 dismantling of the Southern Maine Raging Bulls Week 3.

What is not forgotten is last year’s 34-27 lost to the Panthers in the championship game. “That game could of went either way. Having them come to the ‘Bone Yard’ this year means a lot.” Their 2017 regular season and champion matchups both saw nearly 800 yards of combined offense. With players like Jeff Costa and Jamie Bryant suiting up, you can expect similar fireworks.
