Bulls Play Complete Game in Win

Receiver Mark Roberts celebrates after a score against the Bandits

Portland, Maine – The Southern Maine Raging Bulls used all three phases of the game to defeat the Boston Bandits 23-10 in Memorial Stadium in Portland, Maine. “Boston (1-2) is never an easy game” said Head Coach Ronnie Bates, “we had to do a little of everything tonight to get the win”.

Facing seven and eight players near the line of scrimmage to stop future Hall of Fame running back Phil Warren, the run-heavy Bulls took advantage of matchups and put the ball in the air. Quarterback Alexis Colon found man to man coverage on receiver Junior Brown and connected for a score. “Sometimes you have to take what the defense is giving you”. Later in the game Colon hit Mark Roberts for an exciting catch and run to secure the lead.

The Bandits Adam Headley was disturbed all night by Bulls defenders. The passer was sacked a number of times and was constantly forced out of the pocket. Defensive end Brandon Dorsett recorded a sack and recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. Defensive tackle Evan Hutchinson collected 4 sacks on the day to go along with two fumble recoveries.

Special teams played their part in the victory as both the Bulls punt and kickoff coverage teams limited the speedy Bandit returners to modest gains. Kicker Frank DeLuca booted a 32 yard field goal to insure the win.
The Bandits did manage to score to keep the game close on a 45 yard field goal by Chris Conroy and a touchdown pass from Headley to Calvin Belfon. Fred Ellis and Ant Thomas intercepted passes by Colon.

“We’ve put a few good weeks together” said Bates, “we are playing a lot of players and getting depth where we need it; one thing I’ve learned is that NEFL is a long season and you need plenty of guys to be ready to play”. Next week the Bulls hit the road to take on the surprising Rhode Island Wardogs (2-1) while the Bandits take on the Northeast Natives (0-3) at home.
