Balanced Attack Grounds Wardogs

The Cobras (red) collected over 350 yards of offense against the Wardogs

Middleboro, MA- After 7 seasons away from the NEFL, the Middleboro Cobras let everyone know who they were with their 27-21 victory over the Wardogs. “We just played Middleboro football,” said quarterback Joe Cellini, “tonight we had it going in all phases of the game; we needed that to win against a good Wardogs team.”

The Cobras won the time of possession battle as they held the ball nearly 10 more minutes than their opponent. A lot of that was owed to running back Brandon Cox who finished the game with 16 carries, 132 yards and two scores. “Cox along with the other backs ran the ball well all night,” said Cellini, “that made it easier for me to complete passes and keep the defense off balanced.” Cellini completed touchdown passes to both Dante Bittle (2 receptions for 75 yards, TD) and Dwayne Williams (2 receptions for 20 yards, TD). Cellini, who was in a three-way battle for the starting job in the pre-season, finished the night going 15 for 25 with 180 passing yards.

Defensively the Cobras did just enough to keep the Rhode Island’s offense frustrated most of the night. Averaging nearly 40 point per contest last season, the Wardogs only earned 3 first downs in the second half of play. “We threw a lot at them defensively,” said an assistant coach, “you can’t come at a team like the Wardogs with only one look and think you’re going to be successful-you have to give them all you got.”

Jason Patterson (3) collected over 130 all-purpose yards against the Wardogs

This weekend the Wardogs will try to get back on track as they travel to Boston to take on the Bandits. The Bandits (1-0) defeated the North Shore Generals (0-1) in overtime to get their first win of the season. The Cobras will host the New Hampshire Charge at Battis Field. The Charge (1-0) defeated the Granite State Destroyers (0-1) 17-7 last weekend.
