2016 AAA Championship – Militia & Wardogs
- Updated: October 24, 2016

For the first time in league history, the New England Football League’s Colonial Conference championship game will take place in the Ocean State when the Rhode Island Wardogs host the Western Connecticut Militia at North Smithfield High School this Saturday night, October 29th.
The Militia, who play their home games in Danbury, Connecticut, were last season’s runners-up and have made it back to the title game with an 8-2 regular season and postseason wins over the Western Mass Armor and the favored Connecticut Bearcats. Western Connecticut joined the NEFL in 2011 and were runners-up to the North Atlantic Conference (the AA level) championship that season. After moving up to AAA in 2012 the Militia has made it to the semifinals or better the last four seasons and hope to finally win the title and bring the Leo Lombardi trophy back to the Nutmeg State. Four of the last six NEFL AAA champions were teams from Connecticut.
The Wardogs won the North Atlantic Conference (the AA level) championship two years ago and made the move up to the AAA level the following season. After going 4-6 in 2015, Rhode Island finished this season 9-1 and won playoff games against the Boston Bandits (last year’s champs) and the North Shore Generals (winners of eight regular season games). They will be the first team from the Rhode Island to have played in a AAA championship game. The Wardogs are one of the league’s oldest teams, tracing it’s franchise liniage back to the Bellingham Minutemen who were coached by former New England Patriots players such as Steve Grogan and Mosi Tatupu.
